About the Region: The Guji zone is located in the Oromia region, approximately 300 to 400 kilometers south of Addis Ababa. In 2002, Guji separated from the larger Sidamo region, previously folded into the name Yirgacheffe. The Guji area is named after the Oromo people, a tribe that has been cultivating coffee on this land for generations.

Cultivation Practices: Guji's farming methods remain largely traditional. Farmers typically interplant their coffee with other crops, maximizing land use and providing food for their families. This intercropping method is common among smallholder farmers. Most Guji farms are de facto organic, rarely using fertilizers or pesticides. Nearly all farm work is done by hand, including tasks during processing.

Given the small plot sizes, coffee cherries are often hand-picked by the landowners and their families. After selective hand-picking, the cherries are transported to collection centers or washing stations, where they are sorted to remove damaged or unripe cherries.
